As the primary caregiver for my mother during her journey with dementia and other health challenges, I can’t express enough gratitude for the hospice care team that supported us for three years and three months in our Glenwood Springs home. When we first began this journey, I was filled with uncertainty and fear, but having hospice by our side made all the difference.

My mother had a unique spirit, with her passion for being an Avon representative for over 50 years and her little quirks, like hiding her jewelry in her prosthetic leg. There were moments of joy, like the time when she seemed unresponsive, and while the nurse and I shared a light-hearted conversation, she suddenly smiled and laughed. That simple moment reminded me of the deep connection we had, and it was a gift I will always cherish.

The hospice team was not just a group of healthcare professionals; they quickly became our family—a family that genuinely got along. From nurses and aides to social workers and nurse practitioners, every member of the team showed unwavering compassion and support. Their presence brought me comfort as I navigated the complexities of caregiving, especially during those tough days when treatment plans needed constant adjustments. The unknown was daunting, but the hospice team was always there, providing reassurance and expertise.

What I appreciated most was the flexibility of care. They tailored their approach to meet my mother’s unique needs and my own as a caregiver, offering education and emotional support every step of the way. I felt seen and heard, knowing I could rely on them to adjust our plans as needed, and that I was never alone on this journey.

To families facing similar situations, I urge you to reach out to hospice services. They can craft a plan tailored specifically to your needs, providing invaluable support during a challenging time. If anyone finds themselves in a similar circumstance, please feel free to contact me; I am here to share my experience and offer encouragement. Hospice care is about compassion, connection, and hope, and I wholeheartedly believe it can provide something meaningful for everyone.
