As I approach my two-year mark in hospice care next week, I feel compelled to share my heartfelt experience. From the moment I entered this program, I have been met with outstanding, joyful, and consistent care that has truly transformed my journey. The remarkable team, particularly my registered nurse, has not only provided medical support but has also become a source of inspiration and companionship.
Each visit from my nurse feels like a breath of fresh air. I eagerly look forward to our time together, knowing that I’ll come away feeling more uplifted and inspired. Our shared interests—like skiing, hiking, and soaking in hot springs—have allowed me to remain connected to the passions I once lived for. Although my physical abilities have changed, I now find joy in acting as a “virtual ski instructor” for my nurse, sharing tips and stories from the slopes.
One of the biggest concerns for my family—my wife, daughters, and grandchildren—was how I would manage without the daily comforts I once enjoyed. The team’s presence has relieved their worries immensely. They know that I am well cared for, and that peace of mind has been invaluable. I am also grateful that Veterans Affairs has covered all costs associated with my hospice care, ensuring that I have access to the best services without financial burden. The collaboration between Veterans Affairs and the hospice team has been seamless, honoring my service as a Colonel in the U.S. Marines for 22 years, including my time in Vietnam.
I had a long-standing tradition of visiting my barber for haircuts, but as my condition progressed, I could no longer make those trips. To my delight, my nurse took it upon herself to learn how to cut hair, keeping me in “ship shape” and ensuring I could maintain my dignity and appearance.
To anyone who may be approaching hospice care, I want to assure you that this experience can be one of comfort and understanding. Hospice helps you navigate your end-of-life journey with compassion and respect, offering a holistic approach that honors life and all living things. The team is truthful and genuinely committed to helping you meet your care goals, allowing each day to be as fulfilling as possible.
I have found that hospice care teaches us so much about humanity, fostering respect for life and encouraging a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. I am grateful for the care I receive and the connections I have made. My nurse’s drive to further her education to provide the best care for her patients fills me with admiration.
In these final days, I feel fortunate to have a team that truly understands the value of compassionate care. Thank you for making this part of my journey not only bearable but meaningful.
